Having spent a considerable amount of time in Pakistan, one of the most common complaints I've heard across all social classes is about the unlettered molvī who supposedly gives religion a bad name. To some extent, this criticism is fair. There are genuine shortcomings in parts of the traditional madrasa curriculum. Students are often not adequately trained to engage with contemporary intellectual challenges such as modernism, atheism, liberalism, feminism, biblical criticism, or full-blown hadith skepticism. Too often, they leave with an excellent grounding in the classical sciences but without the intellectual tools to address these newer ideologies on their own terms.

Acknowledging this, however, is a far cry from dismissing the madrasa system altogether.

The purpose of the traditional madrasa was never to produce experts in secular philosophy or contemporary Western thought. Its primary mission has always been the preservation and transmission of the Islamic sciences. Criticizing a madrasa for not producing specialists in postmodernism is like criticizing a medical school for not training aerospace engineers. Every institution has a purpose.

And in that purpose, the madrasa has been remarkably successful.

For centuries, it has preserved the Qur'an, hadith, fiqh, Arabic grammar, tafsīr, uṣūl al-fiqh, and the scholarly tradition through uninterrupted chains of transmission. Every day, it produces imams who lead prayers, teachers who educate communities, muftis who answer everyday religious questions, and scholars who preserve the intellectual heritage of Islam. Even many academics teaching Islam in modern universities ultimately trace their scholarly lineage back to this very tradition.

Does that mean reform is unnecessary? Of course not.

Educational institutions should evolve to meet new challenges. Today's students should graduate not only with mastery of the Qur'an, Sunnah, Arabic, fiqh, and uṣūl, but also with sufficient familiarity with contemporary philosophy, secularism, liberalism, biblical criticism, and modern academic discourse to engage intelligently with the questions of our age. Reform should mean adding competencies, not abandoning the foundations that made these institutions valuable in the first place.

Ironically, some of the loudest critics of the madrasa system are themselves hardly in a position to lecture anyone. Many have never seriously studied a single classical text, cannot read Arabic, and derive their understanding of Islam from social media clips, podcasts, or English translations. Yet they speak with remarkable confidence about reforming a scholarly tradition that has survived for over a millennium.

There is also a double standard at play. The same people who ridicule the village molvī for being unable to answer the latest academic objections often promote liberal assumptions that have done far greater damage to the religious identity of Muslims than the shortcomings they criticize. If the molvī lacks familiarity with modern debates, the liberal critic frequently lacks familiarity with the Islamic tradition itself.

The irony is that the Islamic intellectual tradition has never been inherently incapable of engaging competing worldviews. Muslim scholars debated philosophers, Christians, Jews, Muʿtazilah, various Shīʿī groups, and countless other intellectual movements long before modern secularism appeared. The issue today is not that Islam lacks intellectual resources; it is that some contemporary institutions have not yet fully integrated modern debates into their curricula.

The solution, therefore, is neither blind praise nor wholesale rejection.

Those who pretend the madrasa has no weaknesses ignore reality. Those who dismiss it altogether ignore history. The real task is to preserve what the madrasa has always done exceptionally well while equipping future scholars to engage confidently with the intellectual challenges of the twenty-first century. That is genuine reform, not surrender.
